About the Program:

The Youth Justice Leadership & Community Advocacy Program is a fellowship opportunity for Girls and Young Womxn of Color, enrolled in high school or college, who want to develop leadership, community organizing, and advocacy skills.  The 2020-2021 program will begin in October and run through June 2021.  Young womxn who have a desire to be the change they wish to see in their schools and communities are encouraged to apply.  Watch the informational video to learn more and apply today!  Round one applications are due on Friday, September 18, 2020 by 11:59 PM PST and round two applications are due on Sunday, October 4, 2020 by 8:00 PM PST.   

Eligibility Criteria:

The Code Switch Fellowship program prepares girls to lead change efforts in their community.   Fellows participate in weekly sister circles, group mentored experiences, community events, and service opportunities, as well as gain access to travel scholarships to attend local and national conferences.  Action project scholarships are awarded to fellows who successfully complete the full program.  Due to COVID-19, weekly meetups, and required events will be held virtually.  Fellows must...  ​

  • be 16-24 years old,
  • self-identify as a Black Girl/Young Woman,
  • give consent to participate, 
  • have parent/guardian/caregiver consent to participate (if under 18),
  • agree to be a peer mentor and be open to group and peer mentorship, 
  • provide 2 references, with one being from an individual 24 or over (nomination also required  if under 18)
  • currently be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school or as an undergraduate in college,
  • commit to meeting weekly for 2.5 hours on Thursdays or Fridays after 2PM
  • self-transport to meeting sites (after COVID 19 health precautions are no longer required)
  • have a deep desire to learn more about Black racial history/Black Woman Herstories, youth-led organizing, restorative advocacy, education policies shaping the school-to-prison pipeline, and the skills necessary to develop and lead community-based action projects.

Nominations also accepted.  Special consideration ​given to Black girls with lived experiences shaped by identified exceptionalities (learning disabilities), housing insecurity, identification as LGBQTIA+, and/or involvement with the juvenile justice system due to minor discipline/low level infractions.  The round one application process will unfold as follows:

Decision Letters (email) - Wednesday, September 30, 2020
Virtual Orientation Circle - Thursday, October 1, 2020, 4:00 - 6:30 PM

Application Review and Phone Interviews - Ongoing through October 9, 2020
Virtual Panel Interviews - Monday, October 12, 2020
Decision Letters (email) - October 13-16, 2020

Program Time Commitment:

The program requires a minimum one year commitment. In addition to weekly meetings, Fellows will also need to attend and participate in quarterly Code Switch Advisory Board meetings.  Occasionally, Fellows will have the opportunity to attend local events and national conferences as a group.  These events are not mandatory but attendance is strongly encouraged.  ​As a culminating exercise Fellows will help plan, execute, and facilitate workshops at the annual Youth of Color Restorative Practices Mentorship Summit, typically held in May.  Finally, as a culminating experience, Fellows will co-plan a summer leadership institute for Girls of Color.  A detailed program schedule with all required dates of participation will be provided during the application process.
